Charging rent from adult kids

I have two adult boys still living at home. They are trying their best to get full time jobs. My oldest is 21 and before he got laid off he gave us $75 a week. Neither one of them has ever been on their own except when they were in Job Corp. My husband and I differ on how much to charge them now. They only have part time jobs as unarmed security guards. I say go by their check and he won`t talk about it. They just started so they only have 3 days of work so far. I think $10 or $20 is enough until they get more hours. Why does my husband fight me on this? Is it because they are my kids not his?

I think it's good for adult kids to pay rent or help out in some way. They should without even being asked. I mean if they are in college, then no but other than that they should.
Why not ask your hubby why he has a problem with them paying rent?

That is possible. Maybe it is true, you're frustrated about the unfairness, and you need a friendly ear.

BUT, I hope the boys are doing their own laundry and picking up after themselves. This will at least relieve tension for your hubby.
  • What are they doing with their spare time (not working time)?
  • Do they contribute anything, other than love, to the household?
  • Is your home huge enough for that many adults?
I say you should start expecting rent from them, and yes, it should be based on their income. The reason I say to use a spin down system is that is what they will be affronted with in the real world. We make money + what we can afford = our means.

I wish I could give you a dollar figure......
